Self perception

I copied this from a post on Facebook and it is another fairly typical and popular interpretation of Brazilian self image.  This particular text has been around for quite a long time.  The Japanese flag side states: “If someone else did it, I can too.” and “If no one has done it, I can be the first.”  The Brazilian side states: “If someone else can do it, why does it have to be me?” and “If no one can do it, I most certainly cannot.”

In the end, this goes back to the fatalism inherited from the Portuguese and its reinterpretation in Brazilian culture as being clever, without trying, and that only fools, knaves and slaves should work.
